Sarcodon joeides (Pass.) Bat. Cap 5-15cm across, irregular in outline, convex cushion-shaped; pale pinkish buff to vinaceous brown; dry, smooth to slightly scaly at center. Spines on undersurface up to lcm long, decurrent down stem; pale lilac brown. Stem 20-50 x 10-30mm, tapered at base; concolorous with cap. Flesh thick, firm; violet-purple, deep green with KOH. Odor pleasant. Taste acrid or bitter. Spores subglobose, tuberculate, 5.4-5.8 x 3.6-4.2µ. Deposit brown. Habitat in deciduous woods, especially beech. Common but hard to see. Found in eastern North America. Season September-October. Not edible.
